Made Suraja is a Balinese artist born in Ubud, Bali in April 1979. His grandfather was a Balinese architectural artist so Made was surrounded by creativity at a young age. He first became fascinated with carving and sculpture in 1990 at the age of 11.
As time went by made was selected to become a Hindu priest and to serve his community (Banjar) by become Pura for the rest of his life, beginning in 1999.
Earlier on a caring neighbour took him under his wing and guided him deeper into the art of carving and sculpture for a period of 5 years.
During his teenage years Made was inspired by a neighbour who was a painter. This is when his passion for painting began. Through the inspiration of the Balinese creativity. He would paint the white cloth of his sarong with brushes made from bamboo and paint mixed on his father’s trowl as a palette. He sold his first painting in 1995. Unfortunately his family did not have the wherewithal to support his art studies after finishing High School but he did have many friends who had graduated from art school. One of his friends asked him to collaborate with him as an artist and they worked together over the next 5 years.
As time goes on Made evolved his own unique style of art which has culminated in the paintings that he is creating today. He has been part of group exhibitions in Bali and Java.
He stills serves his village as a priest and supports himself as an artist. A noble life.
